Why Your AC Capacitor Keeps Failing (and What It Really Costs)
Capacitors are the most replaced part in air conditioning. Here is why they fail, why yours might keep failing, and what a fair replacement price looks like.

If I had a dollar for every capacitor I replaced in my field career, I could have retired a decade earlier. The run capacitor is the most commonly replaced part in residential air conditioning, and for good reason: it lives a hard life and dies predictably. What it should not do is die repeatedly. If you are on your second or third capacitor in a few years, something else is going on, and this article is for you.
What a capacitor actually does
Your outdoor unit contains two motors that need a phase shifted jolt to start and run efficiently: the compressor and the condenser fan. The run capacitor stores and releases charge to provide it. When the capacitor weakens, motors start sluggishly, hum without starting, or run hot. When it fails outright, the classic symptom appears: the indoor fan blows warm air while the outdoor unit hums or sits silent.
Why capacitors fail on schedule
Capacitors are rated for a service life measured in tens of thousands of hours at a rated temperature, and summer works against both numbers. Heat is the killer: every 10 degree rise in operating temperature roughly halves capacitor life. A unit baking on a south wall in Phoenix or Dallas lives a very different life than the same part in Portland. Age matters too, and most single stage systems eat a capacitor somewhere between years 6 and 12. One failure in that window is normal wear, not a defect.
Why capacitors fail repeatedly
Repeat failures have causes worth finding:
- Undersized or wrong rated replacements. A 40/5 microfarad unit replaced with whatever was on the truck will die early. Insist the replacement match the motor's specification.
- A dying motor. A compressor or fan motor drawing high amps cooks its capacitor. Replacing the capacitor without measuring motor amp draw treats the symptom and books the next failure.
- Voltage problems. Chronic high line voltage, utility surges, and nearby lightning strikes all shorten capacitor life. A surge protector at the disconnect is cheap insurance.
- Heat loading. Restricted coils and dirty condensers raise head pressure and cabinet temperatures. If your capacitor bay runs hot, the whole unit is working too hard.
What replacement should cost
The part itself is cheap, usually $15 to $60 at supply houses. Installed pricing of $150 to $400 reflects the diagnostic visit, truck stock, licensing, and same day availability, and that range is fair. Quotes at $500 and up for a standard run capacitor deserve a second opinion, and any quote should itemize the part and labor separately.
One honest note from the field: a technician who replaces your capacitor and also measures motor amps, checks the contactor, and rinses the coil is doing the job right. The one who swaps the part in ten minutes and leaves is booking the next call. Ask what the amp readings were. If they cannot answer, you learned something important about the company.
