Myth 4: They cost more to run than gas

In much of the country that math favors the heat pump, especially against propane, oil, and electric resistance. Against cheap natural gas in a cold climate, a dual fuel setup, heat pump plus gas furnace backup, is often the winner and requires no compromise.

Myth 5: The incentives are not worth the paperwork

The federal 25C credit pays 30 percent of a qualifying heat pump project up to $2,000, state Home Energy Rebates reach $8,000 for income qualified households, and utility rebates stack on top. I have reviewed projects where the combined incentives covered more than a third of the total cost. An hour of paperwork returning four figures is the best hourly rate most of us will ever earn.

The practical takeaway: if your heating system is approaching replacement age, get a quote for a properly sized cold climate heat pump alongside your like for like replacement quote, and make the comparison with your actual utility rates.
